PROJECT 2018
DISTILLERY
An old factory full of its original industrial character is the stuff of dreams for many Street Artists and graffiti writers. It’s not just the metal tanks, hulking production machinery, the winding geometry of pipes that frame spaces and beckon you around the corner that keeps them crawling through holes in fences and jumping over walls to get in. It’s the adventure of exploration, the haunting thrill of discovery, the chance to make your mark, to spray a small stencil or a large complex opus completely free hand in a space that once roared with life.
Imagine if you could paint in a place like that by invitation, instead of looking over your shoulder while painting. Dictador Art Masters (DAM) has just achieved the impossible; inviting 7 handpicked international street artists to come create on the inside and outside of a spacious old distillery and compound, allowing them any surface they desire for a week of camaraderie and painting. For these artists from England, Poland, Mexico and Colombia who all have run the streets with can in hand, it is more than a little surreal to have one of these places all to yourself and your friends and instead of fearing the security guard, he is there to protect you
“It is in the middle of nowhere. We just have the palm trees around and the artists are completely free to do what they want – it’s even kind of secret, private and protected. Nobody can just drop in, you know?”
